(If you want a feather with a light tip, you'll begin with the lightest strip. In this tutorial, I wanted a feather with a deeper color tip, so I began with the peachiest color strip.)
12. You'll be cutting this assemblage in half, so lay out a strip twice the length of the finished cane. Mine was 3 1/2" long. Place 4 more strips on the first, flipping occasionally.(Note - ends cut to show cane assembly)
13. With fingers, flatten one side of the stack
14. Continue laying strips on, adding the medium value strips, then the lightest strips as shown.
15. You'll be "bouncing" back and forth between the strips as you make the transitions from dark, to medium, and to light.
16. Turn the assemblage over and smooth with knitting needle or rod. If you don't do this, you'll end up with spikes along the center spine of the feather.
17. Center Vein: Wrap a cylinder of white with a thin sheet of Gold (#7 on an Atlas).
18. Flatten and reshape the cylinder to make a thin tapering vein.
19. Cut the assembled feather in half. Place the vein between the halves as shown.
20. Press the sides together, trim the excess vein sheet. Here is the finished cane.
